Gourami is very popular with both amateur and professional fishkeepers. All the existing species make gourami one of the most extensive fish types that you can have in your aquarium. There are more than one hundred known gourami species divided into four distinctive groups.  Gourami fish are present in many aquariums throughout the world because they can survive in almost any circumstances despite their beautiful look. Explore this category to find more about gourami species.

Gourami’s name refers to the collective variety of fish from the Macropod, Anabantidae, and Trichogaster families.

How generally does gourami look like? Typically, they have a long, extended body, slightly compressed on sides. In nature, gourami can grow up to 8 inches or 20 cm. In an aquarium setting, they usually are two times smaller.

An unusual feature of gourami is their dorsal and pelvic fins that run the entire length of their bodies. These unique fin structures are definitely a part of what makes them so beautiful. Right in front of the gourami, there are long, thin threads which is a tactile organ that helps them find food.

It’s always interesting to explore gourami species diversity. The main difference in species is in their vibrant colors and lyrical names. Some of the most well-known gourami species are Pearl gourami, Kissing gourami, Croaking gourami, Honey gourami, and many others.
